Delve into the rich history of Australia’s oldest tertiary education institute, established in Bishopsbourne, Tasmania—a small rural town with around 130 residents nowadays. Known as Christ College, it was opened on 1 October 1846 and modelled on the Oxford and Cambridge colleges in England. Discover more about Bishopsbourne, the college, notable students and what happened to the building when it was closed and eventually reopened in Hobart, where it operates today.
The interview is available on ABC Listen, starting 34:05 mins into the episode.
Caught your chat by chance this morning (21 July) and my mind drifted to my great grandparents marriage in 1887. The record (Tas Library site) itself says “..at the residence of Mr Alex McBain….Bishopsbourne” and the newspaper (Trove) notice says “…the College, Launceston”. Could you please tell me where you think this union happened? Did Alexander live at the College, or on his own farm? George Marshall was 55 whilst Anna Maria Blyth was 25 – it was his second marriage. Both came from Sorell (S.E Tas) so I can imagine the journey to Bishopsbourne was not one to be taken lightly. Anna’s sister Eliza C.S. Blyth married William McBain so there is some connection. I’d appreciate any info you can give me!!
Many thanks, Louise
